How many watts does it take to heat a room?
About 10 watts per square foot of floor for an average room. A 14 ร 12 ft bedroom is 168 sq ft, so 1,680 W โ which is already past what one plug can supply, and that is the single most useful thing to know about electric heaters.
Ten watts per square foot is 34 BTU/h per square foot, a zone 3 to 4 heating rate. It assumes an eight-foot ceiling, ordinary insulation and a room that is being heated, not merely topped up. Poor insulation or a very cold climate pushes it to 12โ15 W per square foot; a well-sealed modern room sits nearer 8.
The 1,500 W limit is not a design choice, it is the wiring. A 120-volt outlet on a 15-amp circuit safely carries 1,440 W continuously, and every plug-in heater in the shop is built to stop just under that. Above about 150 sq ft in a cold room, one plug-in heater is no longer the answer โ a hard-wired 240 V heater or a heat pump is.
Electric heating is the easiest arithmetic on this site and the easiest to get wrong in practice, because the physics says one thing and the wiring says another.

What size room will a 1,500 W heater heat?
About 150 sq ft as the only heat source in an average room, and considerably more as a top-up in a room that is already heated to some degree. That is the ceiling for any plug-in heater sold for a standard outlet, which is why 1,500 W is printed on almost all of them.
How many BTU is 1,500 watts?

Is one 1,500 W heater the same as another?
In heat output, yes โ every watt of electricity becomes a watt of heat, so a ceramic, an oil-filled and a fan heater at 1,500 W all put exactly the same energy into the room. What differs is how it feels: fan heaters warm the air fast and cool fast, oil-filled radiators warm slowly and coast, and infrared heats objects and people rather than air.
Are electric heaters expensive to run?
They are 100% efficient and still the most expensive common way to heat, because electricity costs several times more per unit of energy than gas, and a heat pump moves two and a half to three and a half units of heat for every unit of electricity it uses. A space heater makes sense for one cold room for a few hours, not as a whole-house strategy.
Can I run two heaters in one room?
Yes, but on different circuits. Two 1,500 W heaters on the same 15-amp circuit is 25 amps on a 15-amp breaker โ it will trip, and if something is wrong with the breaker it will do worse. Check which outlets share a circuit before assuming two sockets on opposite walls are independent.
Should I use a smaller heater and leave it on longer?
A thermostatically controlled heater does this for you: it reaches the set temperature and cycles to hold it, so a slightly oversized unit gets there faster and then behaves like a smaller one. An undersized heater in a cold room runs continuously and never arrives, which uses just as much electricity while being uncomfortable.
