L-shaped room? Split it into rectangles, do each one and add the areas. Do not measure the two longest walls โ that counts the missing corner as floor.

How do you work out the size of a room?
Length ร width for the area, and area ร ceiling height for the volume. A 16 ร 12 ft room is 192 sq ft of floor and 1,536 cubic feet of air โ 17.8 mยฒ and 43.5 mยณ for anyone reading a European specification sheet.
Which of the two numbers you need depends on the machine. Floor area sizes air conditioners, heaters, purifiers and fans, because those rules were written as rates per square foot at a standard ceiling. Volume sizes anything measured in air changes โ an extractor fan, a ventilation system, a purifier compared honestly against another purifier.
Measure to the walls, not the furniture, and split odd shapes into rectangles. The one mistake worth naming: for an L-shaped room, measuring the longest dimension in each direction and multiplying counts the missing corner as floor you have to condition, which can be a quarter of the room.
Rooms in ordinary houses cluster around a few sizes, which makes it easy to sanity-check a measurement before acting on it.
| Room | Typical size | Floor area | Volume at 8 ft |
|---|---|---|---|
| Box room | 8 ร 8 ft | 64 sq ft | 512 cu ft |
| Single bedroom | 10 ร 12 ft | 120 sq ft | 960 cu ft |
| Double bedroom | 12 ร 14 ft | 168 sq ft | 1,344 cu ft |
| Living room | 16 ร 20 ft | 320 sq ft | 2,560 cu ft |
| Open-plan kitchen and living | 20 ร 30 ft | 600 sq ft | 4,800 cu ft |
If your measurement lands far outside the row it should be in, measure again before buying anything. An area that is wrong by 20% moves most of the tools on this site by a full size.
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate the square footage of a room?
Multiply length by width in feet. A 16 by 12 foot room is 192 square feet. If the room is not rectangular, divide it into rectangles, work out each and add them together โ that is more accurate than any single measurement and takes another thirty seconds.
Should I measure to the wall or the skirting?
To the wall, at floor level, which in practice means to the face of the skirting. The difference is an inch or so per wall and does not change any sizing decision. What does change it is measuring inside furniture or leaving out an alcove, both of which can move the area by ten percent.
What ceiling height should I use for a sloped ceiling?
The average: add the height at the lowest point and the highest point and halve it. That gives the right volume, which is what matters for air changes. For heating and cooling, a room with a vaulted ceiling behaves slightly worse than the average suggests, because warm air collects at the peak where nobody is.
Do I include a hallway that opens onto the room?
If air moves freely between them and there is no door that stays shut, yes โ they are one thermal space, and sizing only the room guarantees the unit runs continuously. Stairwells count too, and count for more than their footprint: warm air will use them.
How do I convert square feet to square metres?
Divide by 10.764. So 192 sq ft is 17.8 mยฒ. For volume, divide cubic feet by 35.315 to get cubic metres. The tool shows both at once, because equipment specifications routinely mix the two โ a European heat pump sheet in kW against a room measured in feet.
Why does every sizing rule assume an eight-foot ceiling?
Because the published charts were built around the standard residential ceiling in the United States, where the rules originated. That is why every tool here scales its result by ceiling height divided by eight: the underlying load follows air volume, and the charts only ever measured one height of it.
