Roughly 45,000 BTU/h for an uninsulated two-car garage in a cold climate. A 440 sq ft garage in zone 5 at 47 BTU/h per square foot is 20,700 before corrections; a nine-foot ceiling and the poor-insulation multiplier take it past 26,000, and the ladder of garage heaters lands on 30,000 โ€” but most people want it warm quickly rather than eventually, and that is where the bigger sizes come from.

A garage is the hardest room in a house to heat and the reasons are structural. The door is a wall of thin steel with a perimeter seal that leaks. The slab is uninsulated and in direct contact with the ground, so it draws heat away all winter. There is usually no ceiling insulation, and in an attached garage two of the walls are shared with a heated house while the rest are not.

Insulating the door first is almost always cheaper than the heater it saves you buying.

What size heater for a 2 car garage?

For an insulated two-car garage in a moderate climate, 30,000 BTU/h is usually enough to hold a working temperature. Uninsulated, or in zone 5 and colder, 45,000 to 60,000 is realistic โ€” and the difference between those two answers is entirely down to the insulation, not the floor area.

Can I heat a garage with an electric heater?

A 5,000 W 240 V unit heater is 17,000 BTU/h, which suits a small insulated single garage and is well short of what an uninsulated double needs. Plug-in 1,500 W heaters are 5,100 BTU/h โ€” useful for warming a workbench, not a room. Gas unit heaters and infrared tube heaters exist for garages precisely because electric resistance runs out of capacity here.

Is infrared better than a forced-air heater in a garage?

For intermittent use, often yes. Infrared warms objects and people directly rather than air, so it feels effective within a minute or two and does not lose everything the moment the door opens. Forced air heats the whole volume, which is better if the garage is a workshop kept warm all day, and worse if you open the door every twenty minutes.

Does the garage door need insulating first?

It is the single highest-return change. An uninsulated steel door has an R-value near zero across a large fraction of the room’s exterior surface, and an insulated replacement or a retrofit kit takes it to R-6 or better. Sealing the perimeter and the bottom weatherstrip matters just as much as the panel itself.

What about ventilation and carbon monoxide?

Any combustion heater in a garage needs the manufacturer’s specified combustion air and, for most types, a flue. A car running for even a short time in a sealed heated garage is a serious carbon monoxide risk. Fit a CO alarm rated for the temperature range, and never use an unvented heater in a space where an engine runs.

How warm can a garage realistically be kept?

Most people aim for 50 to 60 ยฐF rather than living-room temperature, which is enough for tools, adhesives, paint and comfortable working in a coat. Holding 68 ยฐF in an uninsulated garage through a cold winter is possible and costs more than heating a similar area of house, because the shell is far worse.

How we calculate this

Garage heating uses the same IECC climate-zone rates as house heating โ€” 27 BTU/h per square foot in zone 1 to 57 in zone 7 โ€” applied to floor area and scaled by ceiling height รท 8, with the insulation correction defaulting to poor (+15%) because most garages are uninsulated. The rate does not separately model door and slab losses, which is why the poor-insulation setting is the honest default here rather than the optimistic one.
