What CADR does this room need from an air purifier?
Air purifier CADR calculator
200 CFM
The room works out at 192 CFM โ 200 is the nearest size actually sold.
- Floor area
- 288 sq ft
- Working rate
- 0.7 CFM per sq ft
For allergies or smoke, aim higher than the minimum โ double the CADR gives eight to ten air changes an hour instead of four or five.

What CADR does an air purifier need?
At least two thirds of the room’s floor area in square feet. An 18 ร 16 ft living room is 288 sq ft, so the minimum CADR is 192 CFM โ a purifier rated at 200 or more.
That two-thirds ratio is the rule the Association of Home Appliance Manufacturers publishes, and it is not arbitrary. In a room with an eight-foot ceiling it works out at roughly five air changes an hour, which is the rate at which a purifier keeps ahead of what keeps coming in: dust from movement, pollen through open windows, cooking particles from the next room. Furniture blocks airflow and doors open and close, so the margin is doing real work.
CADR comes in three numbers, not one. The AHAM seal lists smoke, dust and pollen separately, because a filter that handles pollen easily may struggle with the far smaller smoke particles. Size against the lowest of the three for the thing you actually care about.
The two-thirds rule gives a floor. This table shows what that floor buys you, and what going above it does.
| Room | Minimum CADR (2/3 rule) | Air changes/hour | For allergies or smoke |
|---|---|---|---|
| 150 sq ft bedroom | 100 CFM | ~5 | 200 CFM |
| 250 sq ft bedroom | 167 CFM | ~5 | 330 CFM |
| 350 sq ft living room | 234 CFM | ~5 | 470 CFM |
| 500 sq ft open plan | 334 CFM | ~5 | 670 CFM |
| 800 sq ft floor | 534 CFM | ~5 | 1,070 CFM |
Two practical notes the numbers do not carry. Rated CADR is measured on the top fan speed, which in most units is loud enough that nobody runs it there โ so buy a size up and run it on medium. And a purifier only cleans the air that reaches it, so a unit behind a sofa in the corner of an open-plan room is doing considerably less than its label says.
Frequently asked questions
What CADR do I need for a 500 sq ft room?
At least 333 CFM by the two-thirds rule, so a unit rated 350 or above. For wildfire smoke or a household with allergies, doubling that to around 650 is the difference between five air changes an hour and ten, and it is the change people notice most.
What is CADR exactly?
Clean Air Delivery Rate: the volume of thoroughly filtered air a purifier delivers per minute, in cubic feet. It combines airflow with filter efficiency into one number, so a big fan with a weak filter and a small fan with a superb filter can score the same. AHAM tests it independently for smoke, dust and pollen, and the seal shows all three.
Is HEPA the same as high CADR?
No. HEPA describes the filter’s efficiency at capturing particles; CADR describes how much clean air the whole machine actually produces. A HEPA purifier with a small fan can have a lower CADR than a non-HEPA unit that moves far more air. The filter class matters, but the CADR is what tells you whether it can handle your room.
How many air changes an hour should a purifier do?
Four to five for general use, which is what the two-thirds rule gives at an eight-foot ceiling. Six to eight for allergies or pets, and ten or more during wildfire smoke or if someone in the house is immunocompromised. Air changes are the honest way to compare two purifiers in two different rooms.
Does ceiling height matter?
Yes, because purifiers clean volume rather than floor. A room with a twelve-foot ceiling has half again as much air as the same footprint at eight, and the CADR needs to rise with it or the air change rate falls. The two-thirds rule assumes eight feet, which is why this tool asks.
One large purifier or two small ones?
Two smaller ones in two rooms beat one large one in a hallway, because air does not travel around corners on its own. Within a single open space, one large unit is usually quieter than two small ones running hard โ noise is what makes people turn purifiers down, and a purifier on its lowest setting has a fraction of its rated CADR.

With Room length (ft) 18, Room width (ft) 16, Ceiling height (ft) 8, this page works out 200 CFM. The room works out at 192 CFM โ 200 is the nearest size actually sold.
